Why Choose Hybrid & Electric?

Forward-thinking technology that pays for itself — in fuel savings, comfort, and long-term value. But it is not right for every boat or every owner.

Fuel Savings

At low cruising speeds, electric-only mode uses zero fuel. Solar panels offset hotel loads at anchor. Real-world fuel reductions of 20 to 30 percent are typical for coastal cruisers.

Sustainability

Reduce emissions without sacrificing performance. Stay ahead of tightening marina regulations before they affect your cruising plans.

Full Performance

Whisper-quiet electric mode for anchorages. Full diesel power on demand offshore. Hybrid systems are engineered for serious bluewater use.

Resale Value

Hybrid yachts hold value. As fuel costs rise and emission regulations tighten, demand for efficient vessels continues to grow.

How Hybrid Propulsion Actually Works

There are three distinct architectures — and they are not interchangeable. Most confusion about hybrid yachts starts here.
Serial hybrid

Diesel acts as a generator only — never drives the prop. Electric motor drives the shaft at all times. Silent operation. Efficient at low speeds. Best for defined coastal routes with available charging infrastructure.

Full electric

No diesel propulsion at all. Battery to inverter to motor to shaft. Zero emissions underway. Range is the primary constraint — best for defined short-range use cases with reliable charging infrastructure.

Is Hybrid Right for Your Boat?

Hybrid and electric propulsion do not make sense for every boater. The most important question is not whether hybrid technology is good — it is whether it fits how you actually cruise.
People do not choose hybrid for the technology — they choose it for the experience.
ICW and coastal cruiser
Short daily runs · frequent marinas · idle-speed operation
Strong fit
Low-speed electric mode excels here. Fuel savings are immediate and substantial.
Liveaboard and anchor-heavy
High house loads · quiet nights · generator fatigue
Good fit
Solar and batteries eliminate generator runtime at anchor. Match battery capacity to your daily load.
Great Loop cruiser
Moderate daily distances · fuel efficiency matters
Depends
May make sense depending on your tolerance for complexity and daily distance profile.
Long-range passagemaker
Multi-day runs · limited support · offshore reliability
Diesel is better
Traditional diesel wins on range, simplicity, and global serviceability. Hybrid adds complexity where you need the opposite.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about hybrid and electric yachts.

A hybrid yacht combines a diesel engine and an electric motor — in a parallel hybrid system like Greenline's, both connect to the prop shaft and are switchable or simultaneous. You can run in silent electric mode at anchor or low speed, full diesel offshore, or both for maximum power. It is a fundamentally different experience from conventional diesel — not just a different engine.

Real-world fuel reductions of 20–30% are typical for coastal cruisers using a parallel hybrid system at displacement speeds. At anchor, solar panels and batteries run house loads without a generator running. The savings are most pronounced for owners who spend significant time at low speeds or on the hook — Great Loop cruisers, liveaboards, and ICW travelers see the biggest benefit.

Yes — and it is increasingly viable for vessels 40 feet and larger. The process involves integrating an electric motor alongside existing diesel engines, adding a lithium battery bank, and connecting a solar array and charging system. YSI works with leading propulsion engineers to assess suitability, specify components, and manage the project from initial survey through commissioning and sea trial. A good hybrid system is engineered as a whole, not assembled from parts.

As an authorized U.S. Greenline dealer since 2017, YSI offers the full current lineup: Greenline 39, 40, 42, 45 (Fly and Coupe), 48 (Fly and Coupe), and 58 (Fly and Coupe). All models are available in diesel, hybrid, or full electric configurations. New inventory, pre-owned brokerage units, and demo sea trials are available from our Fort Lauderdale headquarters.

Hybrid yachts have demonstrated strong resale demand — particularly as fuel costs rise and more marinas introduce low-emission zones. The buyer pool is more specific than conventional diesel, but those buyers ask better questions and understand what they are buying. Documentation matters: boats with clearly explained systems and realistic maintenance records sell well. Greenline yachts in particular have maintained strong pre-owned demand.
